How to Choose the Right Rug Pad — Thickness, Surface, and Floor Type
Walk into any home goods store and you’ll find a wall of rug pads with no labeling that actually helps you decide. Most people grab whatever’s cheapest. That’s an expensive mistake if the wrong pad damages your floor.
Start With Your Floor Type
- Hardwood and engineered wood — Felt-top, natural rubber-bottom pad. Avoid PVC — it can react with polyurethane finishes and cause permanent staining.
- Tile and stone — Rubber-bottom pads grip well and are safe.
- Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and laminate — Look for LVP-safe pads or use felt-only.
- Carpet — Needs a spiked pad designed for carpet-on-carpet use.
Then Choose Your Thickness
- 1/8 inch — Right for most rugs. Excellent grip, low profile, no tripping hazard. Ideal under dining tables.
- 1/4 inch — Better for high-traffic living areas where cushion reduces foot fatigue.
Consider the Rug Construction
Flat-weave rugs need a thinner, grippier pad. High-pile rugs benefit from thinner pads too. Hand-knotted heirloom rugs deserve a premium felt pad for maximum backing protection.
Size It Right
Cut your pad approximately one inch smaller than your rug on all sides. This keeps it invisible from above and ensures rug edges lie flat. A properly chosen, properly sized rug pad is invisible in every way that matters — and noticeable in every way that counts.
